#1. Overview of Indian Railways Medical Classification (IRMM Matrix)
Indian Railways enforces the strictest physical and medical fitness standards in the Indian public sector due to passenger safety and operational continuity. Medical classifications are governed by the Indian Railway Medical Manual (IRMM).
Every candidate who clears the Computer-Based Test (CBT) and Document Verification (DV) must undergo a comprehensive medical examination conducted by Railway Medical Officers at designated Railway Divisional Hospitals.
#2. Visual Acuity Standards by Medical Category (A-2, A-3, B-1, B-2, C-1)
Eyesight is the primary reason for candidate rejection in railway technical safety posts. The Railway Board classifies jobs into distinct medical categories with precise vision benchmarks:
- Category A-2 (Assistant Station Master, Traffic Apprentice, Pointsman): Distant Vision must be 6/9, 6/9 without glasses (spectacles strictly not permitted). Near Vision: Sn. 0.6, 0.6 without glasses. Must pass Color Vision, Binocular Vision, Field of Vision, and Night Vision tests.
- Category A-3 (Loco Pilot, Motorman, Goods Guard, Shunting Master): Distant Vision must be 6/9, 6/9 with or without glasses (power of lenses not to exceed 2D). Near Vision: Sn. 0.6, 0.6 with or without glasses. Must pass Color Vision, Binocular Vision, and Mesopic Night Vision tests.
- Category B-1 (Track Maintainer Grade IV, Signal Maintainer, Electrical & Mechanical Technicians): Distant Vision must be 6/9, 6/12 with or without glasses (power of lenses not to exceed 4D). Near Vision: Sn. 0.6, 0.6 with or without glasses. Must pass Color Vision and Binocular tests.
- Category B-2 (Carriage & Wagon Technicians, Workshop Mechanics): Distant Vision must be 6/9, 6/12 with or without glasses (power not to exceed 4D). Near Vision: Sn. 0.6 with or without glasses when reading or close work is required. Binocular Vision test must be passed.
- Category C-1 & C-2 (Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk, Commercial Clerk): Distant Vision: 6/12, 6/18 with or without glasses. Near Vision: Sn. 0.6 with or without glasses. Color blindness is permitted for ministerial desk duties.
#3. Disqualification Rules: LASIK Surgery, Color Blindness, Flat Foot & Hernia
Aspirants must know the grounds for permanent vs temporary disqualification under IRMM regulations:
- LASIK / Laser Eye Surgery Disqualification: LASIK, PRK, or any refractive keratotomy surgery is strictly prohibited for medical categories A-2, A-3, and B-1. Railway hospitals utilize slit-lamp biomicroscopy and corneal topography to detect surgical scarring; candidates detected with laser surgery are declared permanently unfit for safety posts.
- Color Blindness (Dyschromatopsia): Tested using Ishihara 38-plate pseudo-isochromatic books. If a candidate fails color perception, they are declared permanently unfit for all A-2, A-3, and B-1 posts, but may remain eligible for C-1 ministerial desk roles.
- Flat Foot, Knock Knees & Hammer Toes: Evaluated during physical gait examination. Severe functional flat foot impacting brisk walking or heavy track maintenance causes rejection in Group D Category B-1.
- Hydrocele, Hernia & Piles: Candidates detected with clinical hernia, hydrocele, or active fistulae are declared 'Temporarily Unfit'. They are granted 4 to 6 weeks to undergo surgical correction and report for re-examination.
#4. Step-by-Step Procedure to Appeal for Re-Medical Examination
If a Railway Divisional Medical Board declares you unfit, you have a statutory right to appeal under IRMM guidelines:
- Step 1: Obtain the official rejection memorandum stating the exact medical ground (e.g., defective distant vision or failed Ishihara test).
- Step 2: Consult a Government Specialist (e.g., Chief Medical Officer or Professor of Ophthalmology at a Government Medical College) who must certify that your condition was misdiagnosed or falls within prescribed parameters.
- Step 3: Prepare a written appeal addressed to the Principal Chief Medical Director (PCMD) of the concerned Railway Zone within 21 calendar days of the initial rejection memo.
- Step 4: Attach a Demand Draft (DD) of Rs. 1,000 drawn in favor of the FA&CAO (Financial Adviser and Chief Accounts Officer) of the railway zone as re-medical administrative fee.
- Step 5: If the PCMD finds prima facie merit in your specialist's certificate, an independent 3-member Apex Appellate Medical Board is convened at a Central Railway Hospital whose verdict is final.
Over 65% of government application rejections happen due to oversized or wrong aspect ratio photos. Resize your photograph to 20KB–50KB and signature to 10KB–20KB in your browser with zero upload.
